Although, some psychological issues may require more specialized treatments, virtual therapy is a very convenient alterantive option. However, despite the advantages of web-based care, it should always be noted that nothing beats in person contact with a qualified professional – so if possible, such direct communication should still remain the primary choice.
Increasingly, patients are asking for the option to use Internet therapy. There may be some patients, some problems, and some therapist components that render Internet therapy an option. While there isn't enough research just yet, the preliminary research shows it is an promising treatment option that is effective and in some cases more so than in person care.
Is It for me? When considering if tele therapy is right for you consider these:
Are you savvy in the use of computers?
Are you able to take time and deal with a patient in writing out answers in good detail and answer all of the patient’s questions?
Are your computer and the computer of the patient of the same technological level so that e-mail and attachments can be used to their fullest extent?
Can confidentiality be maintained in the computer files devoted to the patient?
Is there any research data or anecdotal evidence for Internet therapy use with the given problem of the patient?
Is the problem clean cut and can it be addressed simply and forthrightly by e-mail messages?
Is the patient computer savvy?
Is the patient a good communicator and can he/she express himself/herself emotionally and factually in writing?
Has a doctor–patient relationship been established before Internet therapy began?
Does your state have any prohibition against the use of Internet therapy if the patient is living or visiting in a different state from the state of the therapist?
Is Internet therapy allowed in your state if you are a licensed therapist?
Is this approach to be used in rural America or a foreign country to reach an unreachable population?
